The following policy shall apply beginning with the start of each season’s practice and continuing through the last athletic event of the season. The policy shall apply for all inter-scholastic athletes and cheerleaders of the Ontonagon Area Junior-Senior High School.
The Athletic Committee of the Ontonagon Area Junior-Senior High School is the body responsible for enforcing athletic policies and establishing procedures, subject to the approval of the Ontonagon Area Board of Education. The committee shall consist of the high school principal, the athletic director, a faculty member chosen by the Education Association president, all inter-scholastic coaches and the cheerleading coach.
Any problems or athletic situations not presented in the athletic policy shall be brought to the attention of the Athletic Committee if deemed necessary by any member of the Athletic Committee. This committee shall have the authority to act on these matters, and recommend any needed changes. An official quorum of the committee will be a majority of the total membership of the committee.
Ontonagon Area Junior-Senior High School is a member of the Michigan High School Athletic Association, Inc. If any part of this document is in conflict with the MHSAA handbook, the rule stated in the handbook has precedence over this document. Ontonagon Area Junior-Senior High School will abide by all rules as stated in the MHSAA handbook.

Conviction prior to such action shall not be required, but some evidence of good cause to justify any action taken shall be required. The quantum of proof required shall be a substantial showing that the student athlete apparently is involved in criminal conduct of a type to bring discredit upon the school or its athletic program.
Any student suspended (including in-school suspension) or expelled from school will not be able to participate in practice or games during the days of his/her suspension or expulsion.
The Athletic Committee of Ontonagon Area Junior-Senior High School will establish, and subsequently meet to review, regulations regarding student athletes:

All student athletes will be informed of such regulations at the start of the season. Enforcement of these regulations will be by the coach. The Athletic Committee will provide the Board of Education with a copy of these regulations each June 1.
The appeals process for decisions made concerning this policy will have three steps. The athlete may be represented by counsel at any or all steps.
1. The athlete or his/her parents or guardians may request a hearing. The hearing committee will be the principal, athletic director, and coach, excluding the individual who imposed the penalty. The purpose of the hearing will be to discuss the charges and review the circumstances of the alleged violation. After the hearing, the committee will decide to either continue the penalty or reinstate the athlete.

3. If not satisfied with the Athletic Committee’s decision, the matter may be appealed to the Superintendent of Schools. The Superintendent’s decision will be final.
Ontonagon Area Junior-Senior High School is not staffed by detectives who have the skills or time to investigate all alleged infractions. Parents or guardians of athletes agree to inform the appropriate school authorities regarding any violations by their own children.
Anonymous written or anonymous telephone information will not be acted upon nor acknowledged. Information suggesting illegal actions by student athletes, including under-age tobacco and alcohol violations, may be relayed to the police for investigation. A follow-up letter to the police will request they hare any pertinent information with school authorities. School authorities have a legal obligation to help protect the rights of the student athlete.
Any student transferring into Ontonagon Junior-Senior High School while being disciplined for athletic reasons at his/her former school will have the circumstances reviewed by the hearing committee. The hearing committee will have the option of continuing the disciplinary measures in effect at the student athlete’s former school.
If an athlete reports to her coach that she is pregnant, or is known by a coach to be pregnant, the coach shall require a doctor’s authorization before that athlete will be permitted to continue participation in that sport. Unless the pregnancy is called to the attention of the coach or of an administrator and the condition is not known, and by exercise of reasonable observation could not have been known by the coach, all responsibility for reporting such condition shall rest with the student athlete and/or her parents or guardians. The coach will, however, be required to make reasonable inquiry if the condition of pregnancy is suspected, but that inquiry shall not extend beyond an inquiry to the student and/or the student’s parents or guardians.
No student shall participate in inter-scholastic athletic competition, or practice therefore, unless and until the student has provided to the school a permission slip for participation in athletic events signed by both of his or her parents if the student is living with both parents, or by the parent with whom the athlete is living, or if the athlete is not living with any parent, then the athlete’s legal guardian. If the athlete is age eighteen or older, the student may sign the permission slip himself or herself.
